The predecessor of the college of Veterinary Medicine of Yunnan Agricultural University was the Department of Animal Husbandry, National Yunnan University, which was founded in 1950. 1960, Yunnan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College was established in Xiaoshao. 1961, Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College, XiaoShao was established by combination of Yunnan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College, Kunming Agricultural and Forestry College. 1964, The main campus of Kunming Agriculture and Forestry moved to Heilongtan, and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was established. In 1969 and 1970, the college moved to Binchuan County in Dali and Xundian. February 1971, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College combined with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Yunnan Agricultural and Labor University and established the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Yunnan Agricultural University (YNAU). 1979, The whole college moved from Xundian County to Heilongtan, Kunming City. 1995, the College of Animal Science and Technology of Yunnan Agricultural University was established. July 2017, the College of Veterinary Medicine of Yunnan Agricultural University was established. three departments: Basic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, and Clinical Veterinary Medicine under the jurisdiction of College of Veterinary Medicine of Yunnan Agricultural. The college focuses on undergraduate education, while actively expanding graduated education. In 2022, 949 full-time undergraduate students and 165 graduated students study in college of Veterinary Medicine.
College of Veterinary Medicine staff have 73 full-time teachers, including 23 professors, 25 associate professors, 49 with doctoral degree, 8 ph.D. supervisors. Among the staffs, one was selected for the National Thousand Talents Project, one for National Science and Technology Innovation Leading Talent, and one for Chief Scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program, the 13 were provincial-level talents, one member of the State Council Veterinary Professional Degree Teaching Committee, and one member of the Animal Medicine Teaching Committee of the Ministry of Education. We have 3 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, one provincial "Thousand Talents Program" high-level innovation and entrepreneurship team, and tow provincial-level innovation teams.
The Preventive Veterinary Medicine is the first Master station of our faculty authorized in 1996, and the second master station, the Master of Veterinary Specialty was authorized in 2002; then the Veterinary Medicine was listed as the first-level master station in 2010, including 3 second-level master programs as the Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Basic Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Veterinary Medicine, also Veterinary public health was added as the 4th master station in 2014 . In 2018, a second-level ph.D. program, healthy breeding of livestock and poultry was established under the first-level ph.D. station of Animal Husbandry belong to the College of Animal Science and Technology. In the same year, veterinary science was listed in a provincial support Ph.D. station cultivation program named "2018-2020 Ph.D. degree authorization station for project cultivation and construction" .
In the past 5 years, 110 new projects including the national key research and development plan were newly hosted, total project funding as 180 million yuan. Among them, 12 are national-level projects, and 39 are provincial and ministerial projects. Achieved 6 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 38 authorized patents, published 20 monographs and textbooks, 58 papers published on Scientific Citation Index journals like Science, Nature Biomedical Engineering, PLoS Biology, Emerging Infectious Diseases etc.
